Oil giant Shell has won a multimillion-dollar court battle against India’s tax authorities, a victory that analysts see as a positive signal to wary foreign investors whom the Modi government is trying hard to attract.
The Mumbai High Court ruled on Tuesday in favour of Shell’s India unit, over a dispute in which the Indian tax authorities accused the Shell subsidiary of under- pricing shares it had issued to its parent company by about US$2.5 billion in February last year. [More...]

The conviction of former state chief J. Jayalalithaa has triggered political uncertainty amid concerns that it could affect business in her southern state of Tamil Nadu, which has consistently remained one of India’s fastest growing states.
The former actress turned politician was jailed last Saturday, after a conviction in an 18-year-old graft case for possessing 660.5 million rupees (US$10.73 million) in wealth that was unaccounted for.
The conviction not only resulted in Jayalalithaa, chief of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party, being sentenced to four years’ jail, but also meant she faces a 10-year ban on contesting elections, unless she gets a stay on the conviction or wins an appeal. [More...]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday launched "Make in India", an ambitious campaign to turn India into a manufacturing hub, promising top foreign and home-grown corporates that he would improve the ease of doing business in the country.
"I tell businesses, India is an opportunity for foreign direct investment," said Mr Modi, quipping that FDI also stood for "First Develop India". Top chief executive officers, including India's richest businessman Mukesh Ambani, Maruti Suzuki's Kenichi Ayukawa and Lockheed Martin India's Phil Shaw, attended the launch. [More...]
